But this flood of information has a downside: it can be incredibly difficult to sort fact from fiction. One of the most concerning results of this confusion is the widespread presence of pseudoscience—ideas or practices that sound scientific but don’t hold up under actual scientific scrutiny.
Pseudoscience isn’t always easy to spot. In fact, that’s what makes it so dangerous. It often borrows the language and structure of science—talking about the brain, referencing studies (sometimes inaccurately), or using medical-sounding terminology. There’s also the risk of placing blame. There’s also room for nuance. Sometimes practices aren’t fully supported by large-scale studies but show potential in early research or as part of a holistic approach. There’s nothing wrong with exploring emerging ideas—as long as we’re transparent about the limitations, risks, and the importance of not replacing evidence-based care with something unproven.
Ultimately, the goal isn’t to shut down innovation—it’s to ground it. New ideas should be welcomed into the conversation through the scientific process, not around it. When that happens, we don’t just protect ourselves from harm—we make space for real progress.
The truth is, we all want what’s best for those we care about. We want to believe that there’s a breakthrough right around the corner, especially when systems have failed us or left us feeling powerless. But that’s exactly why we need to be careful.
